Zenzi Mbuli has extensive experience in directing, choreography,
teaching and performing both in South Africa and Internationally.
He directed and choreographed Zulu Dance of South Africa
for its American tour, Woman in Spirit, for the Market Theatre
and the Rishile Gumboot Dancers of Soweto for the Standard
Bank National Arts Festival, as well as performances at the
Sydney Festival, a 14 week tour of Australia and the Hong
Kong Festival of the Arts.
Zenzi is a master drummer and workshop practitioner of international
repute. He has taught drumming and dance all over the world.
In Africa he has run workshops for the Community Theatre
Festival at the Market Theatre Laboratory, Highveld School
Festival, Maitisong Festival in Botswana, PAWE, Africa 95,
Linkfest Festival in Zimbabwe. Overseas he has led workshops
in France, Poland, Hungary, Germany and the United States
of America.
As a performer Zenzi appeared in Ipi Ntombi’s Busang
Merupa (Bring Back the Drums), for the National Arts Festival,
the Kajoyo Celebration of International Arts Festival and
the UK tour. At the Market Theatre he has appeared in There’s
No Sugar Left, Daughter of Nebo, Man Friday, Art Attack and
A Song for Biko. Zenzi performed with the Japanese drummers
at Wits University. He has also performed for Nelson Mandela
and the British High Commission in Pretoria.
Zenzi toured Austria with Bayete in a production Within the
Calabash. He performed and was the musical director for the
Soweto Dance Theatre for their performances at Festivals
in Germany, Hungary and Holland.
