Vincent Ncabashe was born in South Africa and live's in Soweto. “While
still at school I joined the Thabisong Youth Club, formed
in 1974 by Mrs Makhudu. The aim was to keep children off
the streets and off drugs. For many of us it worked. In the
youth club we were doing activities like drama, poetry and
dance. In 1985 we formed a group called Rishile Poets
and performed in shopping centres and market halls. In 1988 we
went to Swaziland and Cape Town and then returned home to
perform in community halls in Soweto. In 1990 we formed the
Rishile Gumboot Dancers of Soweto and our real journey began.” Rishile
means ‘sunrise’.
