I was born in Soweto in 1971 and joined the Thabisong Youth
Club in the 1980’s, where we were taught traditional
dances, modern dance, gumboots and other activities by senior
members of the Youth Club. In early 1991, after we had formed
the Rishile Gumboot Dancers, we were busking in shopping
malls and on the streets of Johannesburg, when we had the
good luck to meet Zenzi and Tale. They took us into the House
of Theatre (the laboratory of the world famous Market Theatre)
and took us touring to Belgium, Holland and then Australia
and Hong Kong.”
