Darryl G. Ivey
Original Orchestration and Musical Supervisor
Originally from Hampton, Virginia, Darryl G. Ivey is now
based in New York City as pianist, keyboardist and musical
director. He has been heavily involved with Jazz performance
and jazz orientated theatre productions since 1986. After
musical study with jazz pianists Jaki Byard and Billy Taylor,
Darryl conducted the 1987 Australian tour of the Broadway
hit, Ain’t Misbehavin’, featuring the music of
the great Thomas P. ‘Fats’ Waller. Following
a successful tour there, he continued to work with Ain't
Misbehavin’ in several tours of the United States as
well as in Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore. Offers to do
other shows were almost immediately forthcoming. Darryl is
particularly honoured to have been musical director for Lady
Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a play about the late,
great Billie Holiday, which ran extensively in the U.S. and
the United Kingdom. Darryl’s most recent triumphs on
the stage was as assistant musical director of the Broadway
debut of Five Guys named Moe, and as keyboardist for the
Tony Award winning musical Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da
Funk (Broadway Company). His talents have been called upon
to serve many times on the jazz and pop music scene, working
with such artists as Melba Moore, Cab Calloway, The Boys
Choir of Harlem, Phylicia Rashad, Charles McPherson, Peabo
Bryson, Regina Belle, Jennifer Holliday and TV talk show
host, Rosie O’Donnell.
